Canada: Vancouver mulls proposed bottled water ban

The days of being able to purchase bottled water at city-run facilities in Vancouver could be numbered.

City Councillor Tim Stevenson wants those bottles gone, and to prove it, he is leading campaign to ban their sale at all civic facilities.

"Here we're sitting on the best glacially fed water and instead of turning on the tap we walk over and buy a bottle of water that we don't know when it was packaged and we really don't know where it came from," he said.

The idea of imposing a ban is getting support from Vancouver's ruling civic party, the Non-Partisan Association.

"I think they should understand the benefits of choosing tap water and I think it should be more readily available," said NPA Councillor Peter Ladner.

Meanwhile the entire Metro Vancouver region is about to start a big public education campaign aimed at getting people to turn away from the bottle and to turn on the tap."

So while a final decision is still a ways off, it appears the days of being able to buy a bottle of water in Vancouver could be coming to a close
